Cause Of Blackening Or Avascular Necrosis Of The Femoral Head

Avascular necrosis is caused by disruption of blood flow to the bone. Without blood flow, bone cells die and eventually the bone joint is destroyed, which over time can lead to arthritis. Avascular necrosis or osteonecrosis can occur in any bone but most commonly affects the femoral head.
Although the underlying cause of poor blood flow to the bones is not fully understood, but factors such as pelvic fractures and hip dislocations can damage blood vessels and impair blood flow to the femur; Excessive alcohol consumption, long-term use of corticosteroids are risk factors for avascular necrosis too.
